Omaha Hi-Low: Fundamental Outline

Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is frequently seen as one of the most difficult but popular poker games. It is a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites action from all levels of players. This is the primary reason why a once obscure game, has increased in popularity so amazingly.

Omaha 8 or better begins exactly like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are dealt to each player. A round of betting ensues in which gamblers can wager, check, or fold. 3 cards are dealt out, this is referred to as the flop. One more sequence of betting happens. Once all the players have either called or folded, an additional card is flipped on the turn. a further sequence of betting ensues and then the river card is revealed. The entrants will have to put together the strongest high and low five card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is where some players get confused. Contrasted to Holdem, in which the board can be everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi/low the player must utilize precisely three cards from the board, and exactly two hole cards. No more, no less. Unlike regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot may be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is exactly what it sounds like. It is the best hand out of everyone’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It’s the same notion in almost all poker games.

The low hand is more complicated, but really opens up the play. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. A low hand is the weakest hand that could be made, with the lowest being A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest value hand possible. The lower hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and lower. The lower hand takes half of the pot, as does the higher hand. When there is no lower hand available, the high hand wins the whole pot.

While it seems difficult at the outset, after a couple of hands you will be able to get the basic subtleties of play easily enough. Seeing as you have individuals betting for the low and betting for the high, and seeing as such a large number of cards are in play, Omaha 8 or better offers an overwhelming array of betting options and because you have numerous players trying for the high hand, and many trying for the low hand. If you like a game with a lot of outs and actions, it’s worth your time to play Omaha/8.
