Phil Ivey has been branded as the greatest poker competitor in the world by most of the top pros. He was born in Riverside, CA and moved to Jersey before his first birthday. His grandfather taught Phil penny-ante Five-Card Stud poker. From then on on, Phil was addicted to poker and wanted to learn whatever he possibly could about poker. Phil routinely told his parents that he wanted to be a professional poker player. He did not allow the detrimental comments from other people destroy his ambition of becoming one of the best poker players on the planet.
Phil began playing seriously after getting a fake ID by the name of Jerome. He sharpened his game at the casinos of Atlantic City. The beginning number of years for him were a teaching opportunity and winning was not a normal thing at the time. Phil became known at the 2000 WSOP where he made two final tables and won his first WSOP bracelet, in a $2, 500 Pot-Limit Omaha match. At the closing table he defeated a number of the well known professionals including "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.
He decided to take his skills to the successive level and moved out west to Sin City. Phil continues to play in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the greatest players in the world. Phil credits his achievements to hard work and a continuing passion for poker. He states that he is picking up skills every day and is very abashed about his success. He admits to making blunders in each session of poker and always strives to get better.
Despite the fact that Ivey has come first in some big tournaments, he likes destroying cash games on a regular basis.
